Overview
Gumbaz in Srirangapatna is a burial chamber of Haider Ali, the father of Tipu Sultan, his mother Fatima Begum, and Tipu Sultan himself. This tomb and mosque were built by Tipu Sultan in 1782-84 as a tribute to his illustrious father, Hyder (1722-1784 A.D.), after his death. It is situated at a distance of 1.3 km from Sri Nimishambha Temple, 3 km from Srirangapatna Fort, 5 km from Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, 6 km from Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, 15 km from Mysore, 22 km from Brindavan Gardens, 36 km from Somanathapura and 128 Km from Bangalore.
It’s designed in the typical Persian style, It is built on a stone plinth, with polished black granite pillars that run along the corridor around the inner chamber. with a large rectangular garden with the pathways leading the central structure. The Gumbaz stands on an elevated platform at the center of the garden. With a height of about 20 meters, this structure stands majestically. Along with being historically important, these tombs also boast of excellent architecture. The architecture, which looks similar to that of Golconda tombs, captivates every visitor with its intricate designs and majestic structure. with doors crafted from ivory, sprawling corridors and walls with tiger stripes said to be a favorite of Mysore's very own tiger, a mosque and a beautifully laid out garden. The walls have been painted in tiger stripes, which is popularly associated with Tipu Sultan.
