Overview

The Virupaksha Temple is one of the most stunning landmarks in Hampi located beside the southern bank of Tungabhadra River. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is also known as Shri Lokeswara Maha Sila Prasada. Temple is noted for its architecture and has been listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The temple history dates back to the 7th century, it existed much before the Vijayanagara capital was formed. Temple is also known as Pampapati Temple and it is constructed in Dravidian architecture style. The temple started as a small shrine which turned up into a huge temple complex with the help of the Vijayanagara Empire. Some inscriptions in the temple describe the miracles of Lord Shiva and date back to the 9th and 10th centuries. In the 14th century, the Vijayanagara artists began artwork on the temple as carvings and paintings, but by the 16th century because of the attack by the Muslim rulers, their work was abrupted and most of the wonderful work structures were systematically destroyed. Although it was destroyed this was one of the temples in Hampi which sees a huge footfall of worshippers and a continuous approach towards renovations are being made.

The temple has a shrine or the holy place of worship, a hall with a number of pillars and 3 antechambers. There are courtyards, a pillared monastery, few small shrines; and entrance ways surrounding the temple. The temple is carved in stone, and its walls, pillars, panels, and columns are decorated with beautiful carvings depicting episodes from Shiva’s life, different scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and scenes from Krishna’s childhood. On its southern side are erotic inscriptions that are connected to fertility rites. Gopura further leads to Virupaksha’s main Temple. Its main temple has two large courtyards and faces eastwards. The courtyard has a pillared hall (100 Column Hall) at the far left corner. On the far right corner Kalyanamantapa, ticket office, administrative office, police outpost, an ancient well can be seen. The kitchen complex can be entered through this pillared hall. The floor of the kitchen has connections with the river to get access to water. Going further, you can spot the sacred bull, Nandi’s statue; with a backdrop of a wall that has a huge map of Hampi with all its attractions marked.
