Overview

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium (JNP), Bangalore, is located in the heart of the city, only 2 km from the railway station and 1.5 km from the Dr. BR Ambedkar metro station. Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium was established in 1989 by the Bangalore City Corporation, now known as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The administration of the planetarium was entrusted to Bangalore Association for Science Education (BASE) which was formed in 1992. The BASE is an Autonomous Body which is registered under Karnataka Societies' Registration Act. It is principally supported by annual grants from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka. Established in 1989, the Planetarium is a visual delight for children and adults. The sound and light show - "The Sky Theatre Show" about the marvels of the universe, the planets, and the solar system, is designed to be informative and entertaining. JNP started in 1989, has emerged as a premier institution in India. It attracts over 2.5 lakh visitors annually, majority of whom are students. It is equipped with a large 15.0m dome and a state of the art hybrid projection system installed and commissioned in 2017. JNP has monthly star gazing, monthly science movies, Sky-theatre show every day, viewing of astronomical events etc. The theatre can seat up to two hundred and ten persons.

Show Schedule :

Our Solar System (Kannada : 2:30 PM English : 12:30 PM)

The sky-theatre show “Our Solar System” is a forty-minute audio-visual program indigenously produced by Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, Bangalore. The program first introduces the audience to the night sky as seen from Bangalore. Prominent constellations are identified and mythological stories associated with some of them narrated. Thereafter, a brief discussion about the strange motions in planets observed against the backdrop of constellations is done, leading to questions about the center of motion of planets – Sun or the Earth. With the advent of telescopes, even moderate ones, planets came to be studied in great detail beyond what the people had seen before its invention. Telescopic explorations apart, space missions such as Voyagers and Pioneers unveiled planets in a completely new light. Thanks to these missions and some missions such as Galileo and Cassini landed to study specific planets and their satellites. As a result, we, now, have very detailed accounts of the planetary surface features. Even small bodies like comets have not been spared from our spacecraft bound explorations. The present planetarium show discusses all these through indigenously created 3D animations and high-quality visuals provided by Zeiss. This format facilitates the entire sky-theatre dome to be used for casting images/videos. It gives a new, ‘immersive feel’ to the audience. This is the first time in India that a full-fledged, indigenously created full-dome show has been produced in this kind of projection system.

Stars (New Show)  Kannada : 3:30 PM English : 4:30 PM

Starting with an introduction to the night sky, constellations and motion of celestial bodies due to Earth’s rotation, the show goes on to explore the life cycle of spectacular twinkling wonders called Stars. STARS focuses on the lives of the stars - how they are born, how they die, and how our understanding of the stars has changed over time. From prehistoric civilization to Newton, from the electromagnetic spectrum to theories of Einstein, the audience will explore the evolution of ideas concerning nebulae, star clusters, pulsars, black holes, and many more. The journey concludes highlighting the pivotal position of the planet Earth as the only cosmic oasis where complex life has evolved and sustained.
