Overview

Lotus Mahal, also known as Kamal Mahal or Chitrangini Mahal is situated in the Zenana Enclosure a place where royal families of Vijayanagara Empire resided. Lotus Mahal designed as a palace for royal ladies of those times to mingle around and enjoy recreational activities. The Mahal also served as a meeting point for the king and his ministers. Lotus Mahal is a two-storied Lotus Mahal has a combination of Hindu-Muslim architecture The building gets its name due to its geometrically well placed carved archways which resemble petals of the flower seen from the top. The two storied structure is symmetrically laid out, with equal projections on four sides. The base of the structure resembles the Hindu temple style while the upper superstructure is Islamic in architecture with pyramidal towers. The major attraction is the Lotus Mahal located at the southeast corner.

The lotus palace is surrounded by watchtowers which were used by the guards to watch the surrounding premises and take note of anybody arriving towards the palace. The upper floor of the Mahal has balconies with arched windows. The arches of the ground floor are recessed and ornate. The walls are protected from Sun and rain by the curved eaves that run continuously around the building. There are 8 pyramidal towers rise over the central and corner bays of the building. The 9th tower is above the central bay similar to the other eight but higher. Lotus Mahal has a specially built ceiling and walls which had tubular structures from inside which were filled by the water pumped in them by the hand pumps by the lady servants which kept the complete palace cold and the temperature of the palace could be maintained.
