Overview

Bangalore Palace Situated in the heart of the city, Palace Gardens - Bangalore Palace is one of the famous attractions in Bangalore. A visit to the palace offers a glimpse into the private world of one of India’s royal dynasties. And the interiors of the palace feature different elements of the Gothic, Victorian, and neo-classical styles. It is said that King Chamaraja Wodeyar of Wodeyar dynasty was quite impressed by the Windsor Castle of London during one of his trips to England. Hence, the Bangalore Palace was built on similar lines.

The Bangalore Palace is owned by the Maharajahs of Mysore. The construction was started in 1862 and completed in 1944. Located in Bangalore, India, this palace was built by Chamaraja Wodeyar, Maharaja of Mysore in 1887. Chamaraja Wodeyar visited England and was greatly inspired by the Windsor Castle in London. Keeping the Tudor style architecture of the Windsor Castle in mind Wodeyar built Bangalore Palace in India along similar lines.

Surrounded by beautiful gardens the Palace has towers with gothic windows, battlements, and turrets. It is largely constructed of wood plus is known for its carving and paintings. The wonderful door panel at the entrance leads to the grand interiors of the palace. Situated in the heart of the city, between Jayamahal and Sadashivanagar areas, this Palace is spread over 430 acres. The interiors of the Palace have sophisticatedly carved woodwork, breathtaking floral motifs, cornices and beautiful relief paintings on its ceilings. However, the entry to the Palace is restricted you may just marvel at the exteriors of the monument.

“The architecture of the Palace is not just Tudor. It is also Victorian Gothic and was influenced by the architecture that one sees in Regency London. That type of architecture was popularised by John Nash between 1800 and 1820,” says Michael Ludgrove, the curator, Royal Collections, Bangalore Palace. Ludgrove believes that the Maharaja may have been inspired by pictures of Windsor Castle and that it is unlikely he actually visited the London landmark.

The gardens were designed by famed German botanist Gustav Krumbiegel, the architect of Lalbagh and government botanist at London’s Kew Gardens. Plants were chosen carefully to ensure that there was color all throughout the year.

Bangalore Palace Ground

The massive ground adjoining the Bengaluru palace once used to be used for holding public occasions counting music concerts. Many famous international artists have performed in the palace ground. But today, due to the legal combat between the government and the Mysore Royal family, there is a restriction for holding commercial activities. However, many private companies, which are controlled by the Mysore royal family run wedding ceremonies on the Bengaluru palace grounds.
