The statue is carved out of a single block of stone. This single stone structure of Lord Narasimha is a major tourist attraction in Hampi, a UNESCO inscribed World Heritage Site and is considered to be an important monument among the entire group of monuments and relics at the site. The statue is located on the southern side of the Hemakuta group of temples that stand on the Hemakuta Hill. This monolithic structure, of Lord Narasimha in a terrifying or angry form which is 6.7 m in height, has the lord sitting cross-legged position on the coil of a giant seven-headed snake Adishesha. Narasimha which means half human (Nara) and half lion (Simha), While the lower body was of a human, the upper part was like a lion. is one of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The Lakshmi Narasimha statue and the temple housing the statue were built in the year 1528 A.D. It was constructed during the rule of Krishnadevaraya, one of the greatest rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire. Originally the statue also had Goddess Lakshmi sitting on lord’s lap Originally it consisted of Goddess Lakshmi seated on the lap of Lord Narasimha and hence the temple's name, Lakshminarasimha, but according to history it was vandalized and damaged in the year 1565. The statue of Goddess Lakshmi can now be seen in Kamalapura Museum.
